Alexander Booth shares his views on torture and why he sees it as necessary for the safety of our nation.
“I prohibited the use of these interrogation techniques by the United States because they undermine our moral authority and do not make us safer. Enlisting our values in the protection of our people makes us stronger and more secure. A democracy as resilient as ours must reject the false choice between our security and our ideals, and that is why these methods of interrogation are already a thing of the past,” said President Barack Obama on April 16, 2009 in a White House press release. He is, of course, referring to what was dubbed as “harsher interrogation techniques” by the previous administration. While I can respect the sentiment behind this course of action, I feel that the president’s optimism is dangerously naïve. What he refers to as a “false choice” between our ideals and security is oversimplified.
